CELEBRATE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE: MOMENTS OF RECKONING IN THE CAMPAIGN FOR WOMEN’S VOTING RIGHTS
(Burlington) – Celebrate your right to vote just before Election Day this year: join Vermont Suffrage Centennial Alliance (VSCA) at Moments of Reckoning in the Campaign for Women’s Voting Rights on Sunday, November 3rd at 4:30 p.m. The presentation and discussion will take place in The Classroom on the 2nd floor of Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center at 60 Lake Street in Burlington.
This event is one of many to commemorate next year’s 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution presented by the Alliance, a statewide group of volunteers lead by the League of Women Voters. It is free and open to the public. RSVPs to info@vtsuffrage2020.org are appreciated.
Middlebury College Professor of History Amy Morsman explores the complex perspectives and attitudes within the woman suffrage movement, showcasing points of convergence as well as moments of discord, when identity shaped suffragists’ decisions about priorities, privilege, and the way to win the vote. A discussion will follow the presentation.
Morsman is focused on the historical evolution of gender roles, race relations, and regional differences. Assisted by students, she curated the “Votes . . . for Women?” exhibit at the College’s Museum of Art, with vintage photographs, banners, and memorabilia, which she’ll share, along with stories of all kinds of people who led, followed, and even opposed women’s right to vote.
VSCA encourages Vermonters to discover and contribute their family stories, and to remind their local historical societies, libraries, museums and schools to incorporate this important centennial in events, exhibits and programs. Joining other statewide efforts across the nation, VSCA will host a major event in August 2020 in Montpelier, featuring a parade and gathering with speakers, music, and performances on the State House lawn. Leading to that, they will host a 5K Suffrage Scramble, lectures, and arts events around the state. Additionally, they will also feature centennial-themed events of other organizations on their events calendar. Find them at vtsuffrage2020.org

The mission of the Vermont Suffrage Centennial Alliance is to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage and to acknowledge its incomplete legacy. VSCA plans to: inspire Vermonters to incorporate centennial themes into events, exhibits, and programs; provide educational opportunities for Vermonters to learn the inspiring and dramatic history of women’s suffrage; help showcase events commemorating the centennial in our state; host a statewide 2020 event; discover, provide access to, and share stories brought to light by historical records, artifacts, and ephemera; and inspire voters to appreciate and exercise the right to vote.
